If you’re having a dental emergency and it’s after hours, give the office a call. The recording would give you instructions on how to get a hold of me. If I am in town, I would see you as soon as possible. If I am not, a friend of mine is always on call for me. And between my colleagues and myself, someone will get you taken care of and get you out of pain.

If you feel nervous, sedation is available. Laughing gas goes into effect immediately and fades quickly. Oral sedation is also available, although that requires you to have a ride home following your appointment.

When you come in for a dental emergency, we’ll first assess your condition to determine the next steps. Depending on your situation, we will recommend services to restore your smile. They may include a tooth-colored filling to repair dental decay, a dental crown to strengthen a damaged tooth, a root canal to repair an infected tooth, or a tooth extraction if we’re not able to save your tooth.
If you are in pain, that qualifies as an emergency, regardless of the underlying cause. However, some common dental emergencies include a dislodged tooth, broken teeth, mouth trauma, cuts to your gums, advanced infections, painful cavities, and more. You don’t need to remember the list, just the place you’ll want to go to, which is here!
Pick it up by the crown—the part you normally see—rather than the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. If you can’t place it back in the socket, keep it moist in saliva and seek dental care immediately. Time matters when trying to save the tooth.
It can be. Persistent or intense pain may signal an infection, deep cavity, cracked tooth, or another problem that won’t resolve on its own. Pain with facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing deserves especially prompt attention.
Save the crown and avoid chewing on that tooth. Don’t glue it back with household adhesive. The exposed tooth may be sensitive or vulnerable to further damage, so have it evaluated as soon as you reasonably can.
Over-the-counter pain medication may help if it’s safe for you to take. A cold compress can ease swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly against the tooth or gum—it can irritate the tissue. These steps are temporary; they don’t treat the underlying problem.
No. Even if an abscess drains and the pressure temporarily feels better, the infection can remain. Dental infections can spread beyond the tooth if left untreated, so the source still needs to be identified and treated.
It depends on the symptoms and how much of the tooth is exposed. If you’re in pain, the tooth is sharp, or a large piece has broken away, prompt care is wise. Even without pain, the tooth should be repaired before bacteria or chewing forces cause more damage.
